What's the difference between a Felony and Misdemeanor?

People often want to know the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor. In Florida, and in most states, a felony is a crime with a potential penalty of a year or more in the State Prison. A misdemeanor has a potential penalty of a year or less in a county jail. With a felony you lose certain civil rights such as right to vote, hold public office or possess firearms. A felony is much more serious and handicaps many people in employment opportunities.
